Learning From Experience

The continuing education lesson this month is not about a specific principle of leadership. It is about you. It is about reflecting on what you have learned this past year in your leadership journey and how you have grown. We hope you will take a few moments to read the questions listed below and then take a bit longer to deeply think about and answer each one. Be as candid as you can - no one but you will see your responses, unless you choose to share them.

Remember that in your mad rush to bring home all your objectives for the year and still get everything done for the holidays, your people still need your leadership. Please do not forget how important it is.

With that, enjoy the lunches, recognitions, parties and overall good feelings associated with this special time of year. Best wishes and lead on!

Reflections on Leadership:

  1. To whom is my leadership really important? (Think about the various people you touch in business, your family, the community, etc.)

  2. Why is my leadership important to them? (Be specific - think about the people as individuals.)

  3. In what ways have I provided good leadership during the past year? Would anyone other than me recognize it?

  4. What have I learned about myself as a leader? What are a couple of my special gifts?

  5. How have I gotten better during the year?

  6. What am I committed to improving?

Action Plan:

We strongly encourage you to share your insights from the above questions with the people depending on you for leadership.

  • Ask them to comment on your reflections, and to give you some additional feedback on what they need from you going forward.

  • Listen to them closely and with an open mind.

  • Tell them what you are going to do and what you hope to accomplish.

  • Ask them to keep you on course with their constant feedback and encouragement.

  • Then, do the most important thing of all - take action, and follow through on the commitments you have made to them.

Remember: good people deserve good leadership. Do what you must to provide it to all the good people in your life.
