How’s Your Faith?

Greetings Leaders,

Perhaps you have all heard the expression, “everyone wants to go to Heaven, but no one wants to die to get there.” What do you think … true?

This leads to one of the most intriguing notions in the known universe and that is faith. Questions like … what is faith, what does it mean to have it, and why is it important … these are worthy of time to explore. BTW, I am referring to faith of any kind, not just in a Supreme Being.

Isn’t the fear of uncertainty actually rooted in one’s lack of faith in being able to navigate through it? Isn’t our unwillingness to trust others with an important work assignment really an indicator that we don’t have the faith in them to accomplish it?

One of the common definitions of faith goes something like complete trust and belief in someone or something without complete proof or evidence. In the world we live in today, an enormous amount of faith is going to be required, given there seems to almost never be complete, indisputable proof or evidence about anything.

As a leader you must have and demonstrate faith. You need to believe that your teams will be able to figure out solutions to tough problems and communicate that genuine belief to them. You have to have faith that sometimes new things will in fact work out for the better, even when they are still in the messy stage. And, you must have faith in yourself, in your own ability to accept, adapt to, and work through challenges you’ve never experienced before.

So let me encourage you to occasionally take a faith break – to deeply examine your current levels of faith (belief and trust) and its role in how you are leading (and living for that matter). And never forget this. There will always, always, always be more risks than sure things in life. (Consider marriage, having children, taking a new job … well, you get the picture.) Without a healthy dose of faith, why would you or anyone else for that matter, ever venture out into an unknown that is lacking complete proof and evidence. Yet at the same time, look at all the wonderful things you would end up missing.

Keep the faith.
